Why Garage Door Springs Break in Michigan Winters (and How to Get Ahead of It)

Every winter it's the same pattern. The first real cold snap hits Macomb County — one of those mornings where the thermometer reads 8°F and the wind makes it feel like it owes you money — and our phones light up. The story is nearly identical every time: a loud bang from the garage the night before, and now the door won't budge.

That bang is a torsion spring breaking, and it is by far the most common garage door emergency we handle between November and March. It isn't bad luck and it isn't coincidence. It's metallurgy, and once you understand what's happening, you can get ahead of it.

What your springs actually do

Most homeowners assume the opener lifts the door. It doesn't — not really. A typical insulated two-car door weighs 150 to 250 pounds, and the small motor on your ceiling could never lift that on its own. The real muscle is the torsion spring (or pair of springs) mounted on the shaft above the door.

When the door closes, cables wind the spring tight, storing energy. When the door opens, the spring releases that energy, counterbalancing almost the entire weight of the door. The opener just guides the process. A properly balanced door should be liftable by hand with one arm — that's how much work the springs are doing.

Every open-and-close is one 'cycle,' and springs are rated in cycles. The builder-grade springs installed in most Southeast Michigan subdivisions are rated around 10,000 cycles. An average family cycles their door 3 to 5 times a day — call it 1,500 cycles a year. Do the math and a 10,000-cycle spring has a design life of roughly 7 to 10 years. Many subdivisions in Macomb, Shelby Township, and Sterling Heights were built in waves, which is why entire streets seem to have spring failures the same winter. They do. The springs were all born at the same time.

Why cold weather is the killer

Steel changes character with temperature. Below freezing, spring steel becomes measurably more brittle — engineers call it the ductile-to-brittle transition. A microscopic stress crack that a spring could tolerate all summer becomes a fracture point on a 5°F morning.

Cold compounds the problem in two more ways. First, the grease and lubricant on the spring stiffens, so the coil binds against itself instead of flexing smoothly, concentrating stress. Second, cold air contracts the metal itself, adding tension to a part that already stores enough energy to lift a couple hundred pounds.

Put it together and the pattern makes sense: a spring in its final 10–15% of cycle life will very often survive October and die in January. In our service logs, spring replacements roughly double in the deep-winter months compared to summer.

The warning signs (your door usually tells you first)

Springs rarely fail without a prologue. Watch for a door that suddenly feels heavier when you lift it manually, or an opener that strains, hesitates at the start of travel, or lifts slower than it used to. Listen for creaking or groaning from the shaft area. Look at the spring itself: a healthy torsion spring is a tight uniform coil; rust, stretched gaps between coils, or any visible separation means it's on borrowed time.

And the definitive sign — a 1.5 to 2-inch gap in the middle of the coil — means it has already broken. If you see that, stop using the door entirely. The opener will try to lift the full dead weight, and burned-out openers are the expensive sequel to ignored springs.

The $12 habit that extends spring life

Here's the cheapest maintenance advice in this trade: three or four times a year, spray your springs with a garage-door-specific lubricant — a lithium or silicone-based spray, about $12 at any hardware store. Coat the length of the spring and cycle the door a few times to work it in. Do it in October without fail.

Two cautions. Don't use WD-40 — it's a solvent that strips existing grease and leaves the coil drier than before. And lubrication is the only spring maintenance a homeowner should do. Never adjust, tighten, or unwind a torsion spring yourself; they store enough energy to cause serious injury, and spring adjustment is genuinely a professional-tools, professional-training job.

Beyond lubrication, the best prevention is an annual tune-up. A technician can measure a door's balance and estimate how much life the springs have left — which turns a 6 AM January emergency into a scheduled October appointment at a regular price.

If you're replacing springs, upgrade the rating

When a spring does fail, you have a choice most homeowners never hear about: replace like-for-like with another 10,000-cycle spring, or step up to a high-cycle spring rated at 25,000+ cycles for modestly more money. In Michigan's climate, the high-cycle spring is almost always the smarter buy — it's the difference between doing this again in 8 years or in 20.

Replace springs in pairs, too. If one spring has hit its cycle life, its twin — which has flexed the exact same number of times — is right behind it. One service visit beats two.
